WoW Rogue Guide – Sneaky Little Bastards

Many people are intrigued by the concept of the rogue, a lightly armored fighter who makes use of subtlety, misdirection, and speed to win a fight or accomplish their goals. The rogue class in World of Warcraft, described in this WoW rogue guide, is a Stealth-based class that strikes suddenly from the shadows, or slips past defenses to accomplish their goals with a minimum of combat, depending on your preferences. Rogues also have some of the highest melee damage potential in the game.
Damage is the rogue’s sole forte from an instance or battleground point of view. Rogues have no healing spells and only marginal self healing abilities, and thus cannot serve the role of healers. They are also too flimsy to stand up to elite monsters in dungeons as the “point man” for their group, and thus cannot be tanks. As any WoW rogue guide indicates, this also means that playing a rogue requires care and a prudent mindset – being a “hard charger” as a rogue is a formula for suicide.
In dungeons and other PvE (player versus environment) settings, a rogue offers a bit of utility, though of course this is highly situational. Most, if not all, instances have had locked doors removed, so a rogue is no longer needed to run Blackrock Depths, for example. Sapping opponents of creature types that are not immune to Sap is a bit of one target crowd control every WoW rogue guide recommends.
The utility of rogues in PvP is higher than in PvE, due to the nature of the what is needed to win. Skulking near a flag spawn to seize the flag and dash away with Sprint is a tactic made possible only by rogue or druid Stealth. Rogues can also Sap key enemy characters, lie in wait for flag carriers even in the midst of a hostile base, or seize unattended nodes in Arathi Basin. This WoW rogue guide believes they can also make good guards and good scouts in many battleground situations.
People prefer Combat spec for leveling because it is a bit tougher than the other specs, and can maintain a steady rate of medium-high damage throughout a fight rather than having a single huge spike followed by weaker damage. The numerous energy regeneration abilities of the spec allow these rogues to keep using their special attacks over the course of a longer fray, and such talents as Adrenaline Rush and Aggression are “must haves” for successful use of the spec.
Combat rogues have higher survivability and can also maintain a consistently high damage rate throughout a fight. Subtlety opens with a spike of damage, then does less damage, as this WoW rogue guide describes; Assassination opens weakly but builds towards a crescendo of poison damage; but combat starts out with moderately high damage and can maintain it for the full course of a battle.
PvP is the focus of Subtlety, which is very weak in PvE content due to the difficulty of “setting up” a perfect attack on a raid boss monster. Subtlety can be used for leveling, but is somewhat shaky there as well because it lacks the basic survivability of combat specced rogues. The whole concept of Subtlety is centered around the Ambush, with most kills made either by the Ambush or within a few seconds with a follow-up Eviscerate, or not at all. They make superb flag carriers because they can Sprint twice in a row by refreshing this ability using Preparation.
Assassination is a poison-based spec that is good for PvE endgame content. With Instant Poison dripping from a slow main hand dagger for Mutilate procs, and Deadly Poison on a fast offhand dagger to quickly build up 5 stacks of this poison in preparation for a tremendously damaging Envenom, an assassination rogue is ready to play their role as one of the main damage dealers in a dungeon group or raid. Combining Fan of Knives and Vile Poisons also gives these rogues a unique ability to make an AoE poisoning attack against a group of adversaries.

WoW Warlock Guide – The Might of Shadow and Fire

Elegantly sinister, wielding the powerful magic of shadow and hellfire, and summoning a range of perilous, demonic demons to obey their bidding, warlocks are a very distinctive class of the World of Warcraft game, centered on dealing damage. Warlocks are fairly vulnerable thanks to their cloth armor, but can improve their survivability by using fear spells to send their enemies running in a panic while damage over time (DoT) spells gnaw away their health. The WoW warlock guide you are reading gives some hints on how to use these dangerous spellcasters to best advantage.
Warlock spells may heal the character themselves, but they are neither a healer class nor a tanking class, and fall naturally in the role of damage. A WoW warlock guide usually recommends this class for both PvE and PvP, with different talent specs having a stronger or weaker effect in those roles. There is also some non combat utility that warlocks can offer to groups.
Dungeon, raid, and PvP battleground groups can expect more utility than plain damage from warlocks, however. This WoW warlock guide notes that soulstones are probably the best utility items a warlock can conjure for PvE groups of all sizes. These stones can be used to “store the soul” of one player, so that they can self-resurrect – a critical item for healers in any dungeon. Healthstones are conjured items that the whole group can receive, and restore a specific amount of health instantly, much like a healing potion.
Demonology is the first talent spec mentioned in this WoW warlock guide because it is the standard leveling spec for the class. The Felguard, a demon summoned using the spec’s signature move, is a powerful melee combatant with tanking abilities as well, much like a Beast Mastery hunter’s pet. Sending this demonic “pinhead” into combat will speed the leveling process both by killing mobs faster while questing, and by keeping the warlock from generating threat which their poor armor and low health make them ill suited to surviving.
Demonology eventually gives your warlock the spell Metamorphosis (the talent tree’s 31-point talent), which allows them to transform into a demon for half a minute. As WoW warlock guides tell you, this demonic form is extremely tough and gains several abilities, as well as casting normal spells.
If you prefer hurling spells to standing back and letting your demon do most of the work, Destruction is probably the warlock spec for you. Described accurately in most WoW warlock guides as the highest damage spec for endgame raids due to direct damage potential, these warlocks can also hold their own in leveling but are somewhat weaker in PvP. Soul Fire, Conflagrate, and the like form the core of their spell priority. Imps are the preferred pets for instances for extra damage.
Affliction warlocks are firmly centered on damage over time spells rather than the direct damage spells favored by destruction; they are the “DoT spec” of the class and are described as such in this WoW warlock guide. These DoTs are highly effective at burning away a foe’s health, and affliction is frequently used to good effect in PvP.
Although they can be used in dungeons, the damage potential of affliction warlocks is fairly flaccid in that situation. Trash mobs are slain prior to the DoTs having any real effect, and only bosses are damaged fully by the impact of affliction DoT spells.

WoW Mage Guide – Strength and Fragility

Mages, in World of Warcraft, somewhat resemble the famous description of World War I battleships – eggshells armed with hammers. They can slow their opponents with bitter blasts of ice and frost, scorch them with potent fire spells, or blow them to pieces with a shower of arcane bolts. Their nearly unarmored condition, however, means that it requires an elusive play style to use them effectively – as any WoW mage guide will tell you, you must avoid close combat at all costs.
Mages are a damage class in World of Warcraft, able to inflict huge amounts of damage to opponents at range with their spells (which, incidentally, bypass most armor protection). They are incapable of either healing or tanking, the other two main roles of the game. They bring plenty of utility to raids, instance groups, and PvP, however, due to several of their spells. As any good WoW mage guide will tell you, conjuring water for group or raid members is a major utility role for mages in PvE situations. Crowd control in the form of Frost Nova, which freezes opponents to the ground for a brief period of time, is useful in some dungeons, and extremely useful in PvP, when it can immobilize a good part of an enemy team for several crucial seconds.
“Sheeping” opponents, which involves use of the Polymorph spell to turn a hostile creature or player into a harmless sheep for some time, is useful to reduce the odds when fighting several monsters or a group of “trash mobs” in a dungeon. Frost Nova is another crowd control spell, while conjured water is a free alternative to vendor-bought mana drinks that is appreciated by all dungeon groups.
When you are power leveling your mage character, Frost is the most useful talent specialization, according to most WoW mage guides. This is due to the fact that many frost spells and talents have a crowd control element in them, either reducing the speed of a foe who has been struck by these spells, or freezing them in place outright. This feature also makes the frost mage the preferred spec for dealing with PvP situations, where keeping death knights, paladins, rogues, and other melee classes away is paramount.
Frost mages are the only spec of mage with a summonable pet – since Cataclysm, this water elemental has been the signature move of the spec, available from level 10 onwards.
Fire mages are capable of inflicting the most damage of any mage spec, and are the spec of choice for many endgame raiders and dungeon aficionados for this reason, as WoW mage guides will tell you. Their spells are all designed to produce the highest damage possible, searing their foes to ash swiftly. They are very vulnerable in PvP, however, because of their lack of movement-limiting spells.
They have a few talented stuns, allowing them to deal with NPC foes on a more equal footing, and a few mobility-enhancing abilities that can help keep them out of melee. However, this WoW mage guide notes they are more easily killed while leveling than frost mages, and, as mentioned, are very fragile in PvP.
The arcane talent spec is now at a midpoint between fire and frost for survivability and damage, but has many interesting tricks. For example, Improved Counterspell silences enemy casters as well, making this mages good “mage hunters”. They are well suited to PvP and, when played properly, can provide a satisfactory damage output in instance or raiding situations, too.
